The Expo 2025 Osaka, with its theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”, is in full swing, focusing on building a blueprint for future living. As the host country, Japan’s pavilion, titled “Between Lives”, carries the significant responsibility of exemplifying and vividly interpreting this theme.

Design Philosophy: Symbolizing Cycle and Flow

Located outside the main “Grand Ring” building of the expo site, the Japan Pavilion adopts a circular design as its main structure, constructed with cross-laminated timber (CLT) arranged in rows to form a ring-shaped framework. This design symbolizes the cycle and flow of life. The gaps between the wooden panels allow glimpses into the interior, enabling visitors to deeply experience the pavilion’s theme of “Between Lives” through the continuity and intervals between the building's inside and outside.

Sustainable Practices: A Full Cycle from Energy to Architecture

The concept of “cycle” is thoroughly embodied in the Japan Pavilion’s design. The pavilion features a microbial decomposition system that converts food waste generated at the expo into biogas for electricity, achieving self-sufficient energy circulation. The visitor path is designed as a spiraling circular corridor, where multimedia installations, algae cultivation displays, and interactive art gradually reveal the multiple dimensions of “cycle”. Additionally, after the expo concludes, the building components will be dismantled and repurposed for public projects across Japan, putting the sustainable philosophy of “from temporary to eternal” into practice.
