Shanxi Ancient Architecture Institute and Harvard University Join Hands to Promote the International Digital Communication of Ancient Architecture
Recently, Shanxi Institute for the Preservation of Ancient Architecture and Polychrome Murals (Shanxi Ancient Architecture Institute) has collaborated with Harvard University's Chinese Art Media Lab (CAMLab). Together, they will leverage cutting-edge research and multimedia technologies to jointly advance the preservation, study, and dissemination of Shanxi's ancient architectural heritage. Their goal is to promote China's outstanding cultural relics in diverse forms onto a broader and deeper international stage.
Shanxi Province boasts a large number of well-preserved ancient architectural relics. Among them, Foguang Temple and Nanchan Temple, as representatives of wooden structures from the Tang Dynasty, possess significant value for dissemination. However, due to factors such as the immobility of the buildings themselves, the international dissemination of these precious heritages faces challenges. To this end, Shanxi Ancient Architecture Institute and Harvard University's Chinese Art Media Lab plan to conduct multi-dimensional digital artistic displays of the architectural elements, painted sculptures, murals, and other features of Foguang Temple and Nanchan Temple through means such as data integration, VR immersive experiences, and multimedia exhibitions. The two institutions will combine offline exhibitions and online displays to expand the influence of Shanxi's ancient architecture both domestically and internationally.
This collaboration will prioritize the comprehensive digital art exhibition of Foguang Temple and the development of VR immersive experiences for Nanchan Temple. Through innovative digital formats, audiences will have the opportunity to transcend time and space, experiencing up close the architectural aesthetics and historical depth of these two ancient temples, and exploring their cultural connotations. Leveraging its international strengths in academic research, digital technology development, and exhibition planning, Harvard University's Chinese Art Media Lab will be responsible for content planning, display design, and the organization of related activities. Both institutions also plan to organize a series of international academic conferences, field studies, and lectures, as well as publish Chinese and English catalogues, providing the public and academic community with a richer platform for research, learning, and exchange.
