Taiyuan Ancient County: A Suspenseful Epic in Narrow Alleys, A Town's Rebirth on Screen

2023年大年初一，张艺谋执导的电影《满江红》全国公映。同日，影片在太原古县城的拍摄基地同步对外开放。一座始建于明代的古城，与一部悬疑与家国情怀交织的影片，就这样在银幕内外同时登场。

On the first day of the 2023 Lunar New Year, Zhang Yimou's Full River Red (Man Jiang Hong) hit cinemas nationwide. That same day, the film's shooting base in Taiyuan Ancient County opened to the public. An ancient town first built in the Ming dynasty and a film woven with suspense and patriotic sentiment made their debut together, both on screen and off.

电影《满江红》的故事，发生在一座深宅大院之中——剧情紧凑悬疑、演员演技精湛，让观众瞬间穿越到了那个历史年代。人物行走的深宅窄巷古色古香，与光影色彩结合在一起，将氛围感拉满。而这座“深宅大院”并非特效合成的虚拟场景——它就坐落在山西太原的古县城里，是专为电影拍摄而新建的一座五进传统围合式院落。占地50亩的影视基地，位于太原古县城东北角，由两所院落打通，通道狭长，院落内部结构整齐贯通。青砖灰瓦、高墙窄巷，构成了极致悬疑的视觉美学。

The story of Full River Red unfolds within a sprawling traditional courtyard estate. The tightly wound plot and the cast’s superb performances transport audiences instantly to that distant historical era. The period charm of the deep mansions and narrow alleys, combined with the interplay of light and shadow, creates an immersive atmosphere that lingers long after the credits roll. Yet this "courtyard estate" is no CGI construct — it stands in the heart of Taiyuan Ancient County in Shanxi, a five-courtyard traditional enclosed compound built specifically for the film. pning 50 mu (about 8.2 acres) at the northeast corner of the ancient town, the base connects two courtyards with narrow passageways and a rigorously ordered interior. Grey brick, black tile, high walls and tight lanes — together they forge a visual aesthetic of suspense.

这座基地的诞生，源于张艺谋对山西的偏爱。《满江红》是他在《大红灯笼高高挂》之后再一次选址山西拍摄的电影。在张艺谋看来，太原古县城拥有2500多年深厚的历史底蕴，非常契合电影中想要表达的“英雄古城”的风格和主题。

The birth of this filming base owes much to Zhang Yimou’s affinity for Shanxi. Full River Red marks the director's return to Shanxi since Raise the Red Lantern. In Zhang's vision, Taiyuan Ancient County, with its profound historical legacy stretching back over 2,500 years, perfectly matched the "heroic ancient city" style and theme he sought to convey.

而太原古县城本身，本身就是一本立体的历史书。它始建于明洪武八年（公元1375年），坐落于晋阳古城遗址之上。晋阳古城始建于春秋时期（公元前497年），是赵国初期的都城。北宋初年，宋太宗赵光义焚毁水淹晋阳城，千年古城化为废墟。明朝在晋阳古城遗址的南关村重建太原县城。历经六百余年风雨洗礼，古城街巷肌理、城池轮廓完整留存。

Taiyuan Ancient County itself is a living history book. It was first built in the eighth year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming dynasty (1375 CE), situated atop the ruins of the ancient city of Jinyang. Jinyang was first established in the Spring and Autumn period (497 BCE) as an early capital of the State of Zhao. In the early Northern Song dynasty, Emperor Taizong of Song ordered Jinyang burned and flooded, reducing the thousand-year-old city to rubble. The Ming dynasty rebuilt Taiyuan County Town on the site of Jinyang's southern outpost. After over six centuries of wind and rain, the town's street layout and city walls remain remarkably intact.

因整体形制形似展翅凤凰，太原古县城自古便被誉为“凤凰城”。城南门如凤尾，北门为凤首，东西二门似凤之双翼。城内散落38处文物保护单位，其中文庙为全国重点文物保护单位；县衙、察院、关帝庙、城隍庙、玉皇庙等明清建筑鳞次栉比。每一块青砖黛瓦，都镌刻着明清晋地的建筑规制与人文风貌。

Its overall form resembles a phoenix in flight, earning it the ancient name "Phoenix City". The south gate forms the phoenix's tail, the north gate its head, and the east and west gates its spreading wings. Within the town walls lie 38 protected cultural heritage sites, including the Confucian Temple, a national key cultural relic protection unit; Ming and Qing architecture — the county yamen, the inspection office, the Temple of Guan Yu, the Town God's Temple, the Temple of the Jade Emperor — stands in close array. Every grey brick and black tile bears the imprint of the architectural codes and cultural character of Ming-Qing Shanxi.
