——Exploring 5,000 Years of Civilization in Shanxi

If “Roots of Chinese Civilization” traces the origins of our culture, then “Architectural Splendors” speaks to the enduring spirit of wood and stone that has stood for millennia.

Today, we begin the first route of “Architectural Splendors” — “A Millennium of Wooden Architecture.” This route, from north to south, connects the brightest gems of Shanxi’s ancient architecture: Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, Xuankong Temple, Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, Chongfu Temple, Nanchan Temple, Foguang Temple, Pingyao Ancient City, Zhenguo Temple, Shuanglin Temple, and Jinci Temple.

This is a dialogue with millennia-old wooden structures. Let’s start from Datong and head south, to truly understand why “above ground, look to Shanxi for cultural relics.”

Xuankong Temple — A Millennium-Old Wonder on a Cliff

【Shanxi's Cultural Landscape】Architectural Splendors (Route 1)

Location: On the cliffs of Cuiping Peak, Jinlong Gorge, Hengshan Mountain, Hunyuan County, Datong City.

Driving directions: From downtown Datong, take G18 Rongwu Expressway southeast, exit at “Hunyuan,” then drive south on the tourist road for 10 km. Approximately 80 km, about 1.5 hours.

Xuankong Temple was built in 491 AD, hanging on a near-vertical cliff for over 1,500 years.

Why hasn’t it fallen in a thousand years? The secret lies in the beams drilled into the mountain. This “half-inserted flying beam” structure allows the temple to grip the cliff tightly.
