【Shanxi's Cultural Landscape】Architectural Splendors (Route 1)
——Exploring 5,000 Years of Civilization in Shanxi
If “Roots of Chinese Civilization” traces the origins of our culture, then “Architectural Splendors” speaks to the enduring spirit of wood and stone that has stood for millennia.
Today, we begin the first route of “Architectural Splendors” — “A Millennium of Wooden Architecture.” This route, from north to south, connects the brightest gems of Shanxi’s ancient architecture: Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, Xuankong Temple, Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, Chongfu Temple, Nanchan Temple, Foguang Temple, Pingyao Ancient City, Zhenguo Temple, Shuanglin Temple, and Jinci Temple.
This is a dialogue with millennia-old wooden structures. Let’s start from Datong and head south, to truly understand why “above ground, look to Shanxi for cultural relics.”
Xuankong Temple — A Millennium-Old Wonder on a Cliff

Xuankong Temple was built in 491 AD, hanging on a near-vertical cliff for over 1,500 years.
Why hasn’t it fallen in a thousand years? The secret lies in the beams drilled into the mountain. This “half-inserted flying beam” structure allows the temple to grip the cliff tightly.
The temple uniquely houses Sakyamuni, Laozi, and Confucius together. Legend has it that Li Bai wrote the characters “Magnificent View” here, still visible today.
Yingxian Wooden Pagoda — A Millennial Miracle of Wooden Architecture

The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, full name Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple, was built in 1056 AD. At 67.31 meters tall, it is the tallest and oldest existing all-wooden pagoda in the world, ranking with the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Eiffel Tower as one of the “Three Greatest Pagodas in the World.”
The pagoda uses over 7,400 tons of pine wood, not a single iron nail, relying entirely on mortise and tenon joints. It has survived over 40 earthquakes and countless wars.

In the early 20th century, Japanese scholars claimed there were no surviving Tang-dynasty wooden structures in China. Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin searched for years until they discovered Foguang Temple in the summer of 1937.
The East Main Hall of Foguang Temple was rebuilt in 857 AD, making it the oldest and most complete official Tang-dynasty wooden structure in China. Liang Sicheng summarized its Tang relics as the “Four Wonders”: Tang Architecture, Tang Painted Sculptures, Tang Murals, and Tang Inscriptions.
Stand before the East Main Hall, and you will understand why it is called the “Number One National Treasure of China.”

“If you haven’t been to Jinci, you haven’t been to Taiyuan.” With 3,000 years of uninterrupted history, Jinci is known as the “Museum of Chinese Ancient Architecture.”
