【Shanxi's Cultural Landscape】 Between Mountains and Rivers: A Self-Drive Route (Northern Shanxi)
——Exploring 5,000 Years of Civilization in Shanxi
The phrase "Lofty Mountains and Grand Rivers" comes from Zuo Zhuan, describing Shanxi as a land guarded by the Yellow River without and the Taihang Mountains within — a natural fortress as solid as metal and stone. Today, we begin the first route of "Between Mountains and Rivers: A Self-Drive Route (Northern Shanxi)". Starting from Datong and heading south, this route connects the brightest gems of ancient architecture in northern Shanxi: Yungang Grottoes, Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, Chongfu Temple, Nanchan Temple, and Foguang Temple.
