The Datong Museum is located in the north of Shanxi Province, Datong. The Datong Museum is a comprehensive geographic museum, and now the national-level museum. It was founded in 1958 and officially opened to the public in 1959 named the Datong City Cultural Relics Exhibition Hall. In 1963, it was renamed the Datong Museum.
The Datong Museum has more than 170,000 cultural relics, of which more than 3,000 are precious. The collection is famous for displaying the culture of the northern ethnic minorities, the culture of the strategic frontier towns and religious culture. It focuses on the expression of the fusion of cultures of the Datong region, especially the fine artifacts of the Northern Wei, the Liao and the Jin Dynasties, which enjoys a prestigious reputation.
As a local museum, it is always the belief of the Datong Museum to promote traditional Chinese culture and cultivate socialist core values.
With the regional characteristics of Datong’s history and culture as the thread, the main museum focuses on reflecting the development of ethnic integration in the region, it features four historical displays, namely "Vicissitudes of Time", "Pingcheng of Northern Wei ", "Western Capital of Liao and Jin Dynasties",and"Strategic town in the Ming and Qing Dynasties", as well as the political, economic, military and cultural prosperity brought about by these four historical displays, reproducing the scene of various ethnic groups living together, promoting each other's development, and harmoniously coexisting, and fully reflecting the regional cultural representation of ethnic integration.
