Shanxi Shuozhou | Guangwu City: A Thousand Years of History, Splendid After Weathering Storms and Winds
The Old Guangwu City, located in Shanyin County, Shanxi Province, is an ancient city of the Liao Dynasty that has endured for thousands of years. The city was originally built during the Liao and Jin dynasties as a defensive stronghold in front of the Yanmen Pass. The relatively intact ancient city walls that remain today were built during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The city wall is 300 meters long from east to west and 500 meters long from north to south. It is 8.2 meters high, while the parapet wall is 1.7 meters high. The base of the wall is 6 meters wide. There are three gates: the East Gate, the West Gate, and the South Gate. It is the most intact ancient city of the Liao Dynasty that still exists in China.
Exiting the Old Guangwu Village, travel westwards along the road uphill to arrive at the Guangwu Great Wall. The Guangwu Great Wall starts from the New Guangwu Village in the west and extends south to the Baicaokou Village, with a total length of nearly 10 kilometers. There are 20 guard towers in total, of which 5 are relatively well-preserved. Among them, the sawtooth-shaped Great Wall near Baicaokou Village is rarely seen in China; while the unique "Moon Gate" landscape of the No. 10 Guard Tower, also known as the "Pierced-through Tower," is the most beautiful relic of the Guangwu Great Wall.
In 2016, the "Moon Gate" collapsed due to years of wind and rain erosion. After restoration, the arched "Moon Gate" remains as it was. Ancient and weathered, the Guangwu Great Wall, which has endured for hundreds of years, still silently speaks of the weight of time.
