In the rich and vibrant Shanxi’s New Year traditions, Shehuo stands out as one of the most iconic Spring Festival customs, celebrated for its lively form and deep historical roots. Every Lunar New Year, the streets and alleyways come alive with the thunder of drums and gongs and the joyful swirl of Yangge dance. Through this ancient yet vibrant ritual, people express their hopes and joy for a better life in the year ahead.

山西被誉为中国的“社火之乡”，其社火传统源远流长，可追溯至上古时期的“驱傩”仪式，与人们对土地和火的原始崇拜息息相关。“社”指土地神，“火”为火神，古人通过歌舞祭祀，既为驱散邪祟疫病，亦为祈求风调雨顺、五谷丰登。历经数千年的演变，这项古老仪式与春节庆典、地方信仰深度融合，在山西大地上开枝散叶，形成了形式多样、气势磅礴的民间艺术盛宴。2006年，山西社火被列入首批国家级非物质文化遗产名录，其文化价值与生命力得到了国家的正式认可。

Shanxi is known as the “hometown of Shehuo” in China. Its Shehuo tradition dates back to the ancient “Nuo” exorcism rituals, closely tied to the primal worship of land and fire. “She” refers to the land god, while “huo” represents the fire god. Through song and dance, ancient people performed rituals to ward off evil spirits and plagues and to pray for favorable weather and bountiful harvests. Over thousands of years of evolution, this ancient ritual has deeply integrated with Spring Festival celebrations and local beliefs, branching out across Shanxi and forming a diverse and magnificent folk art spectacle. In 2006, Shanxi Shehuo was included in the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage, officially recognizing its cultural value and vitality.

Shanxi Shehuo is characterized by its grand scale, diverse forms, and lively content, deeply rooted in folk life and imbued with strong local flavor. Common performances include the drum and gong ensembles, yangge dances, radiant lantern displays, dragon and lion dances, as well as thrilling stilt walking, swaying land boat performances, ingeniously crafted shoulder-pole acts, and creatively designed parade floats. Each form tells a flowing folk story and paints a vivid picture of local customs.

作为春节期间的重要仪式，社火的表演质朴而充满蓬勃的生命力。你看那旱船在人群中轻盈摇摆，船桨划动仿佛真在水中前行，与铿锵的锣鼓声相映成趣；舞狮队伍随着鼓点腾挪跳跃，狮眼灵动，既象征着驱邪纳吉，又烘托出满堂喜庆；最令人称奇的是背棍——孩童身着华服，被巧妙固定在成人肩背的铁架上，随着行走摇曳生姿，宛如凌空飞舞，巧妙融合了民间杂技、造型艺术与服饰工艺的智慧。
