Following the Little Monsters of Langlang Mountain on a Tour of Shanxi — Northern Shanxi Route (Part 2)
This summer, the group of little monsters from the animation "Nobody" won over audiences with their relatable, sincere portrayals of "ordinary people," leading viewers on a journey filled with the vibrancy of daily life and the charm of ancient architecture. Shanxi Cultural Tourism specially launched two themed travel routes—one southern, one northern. This article will take you along the northern route to explore Taiyuan in "Langlang Mountain" alongside the little monsters.
Taiyuan Jinci Temple "Water Mirror Stage"
In "Nobody," four little monsters disguised themselves as the Tang Monk and his disciples to beg for alms at a temple. Though the old monk saw through their disguises, he still helped them on their way. The prototype of this temple is the Water Mirror Stage at Jinci Temple in Taiyuan. It’s worth noting that the Water Mirror Stage has also appeared in the 1986 edition "Journey to the West," the animated film "Havoc in Heaven," and last year’s hit game "Black Myth: Wukong," making it a regular feature in adaptations of the Journey to the West story.
The Water Mirror Stage boasts unique architectural style, integrating tower, platform, hall, and pavilion into one structure. The front section features a single-eave rolled-shed roof, while the rear has a double-eave hip-and-gable roof, creating a majestic form with exquisite carvings and paintings. The plaque inscribed with "Water Mirror Stage" draws from the "Book of Han," implying that "clear water and a bright mirror leave nowhere to hide," symbolizing that good and evil will always be revealed. The scene where the little pig monster looks up at the glowing plaque is particularly memorable. A visit here blends history with the present, connecting the screen with the physical site, making it an ideal spot for photos and experiencing cultural fusion.
