In the history of Chinese cinema, one scene has moved countless viewers: a young female medic stands on the bank of the Yellow River, spreads her arms, smiles as she embraces the sky and earth. This image comes from director Feng Xiaoning's war romance Lovers' Grief over the Yellow River, filmed at Hukou Waterfall in Jixian County, Linfen, Shanxi. The film was released in Hungary on September 29, 2005, bringing this tragic song of homeland and humanity to international audiences.

Lovers' Grief over the Yellow River tells the story of the Eighth Route Army escorting an American pilot through the Yellow River border region of Shanxi during the War of Resistance Against Japan, fighting bloody battles with Japanese troops. The film unfolds around a perilous escort mission, fully displaying the conflicts of personality and spiritual communication between characters, and performing a majestic and tragic hymn beside the surging Hukou Waterfall. And the waterfall itself is the film's most stunning "co-star."

壶口瀑布是世界第一大黄色瀑布，位于临汾市吉县城西45公里处。黄河在此由河宽300米收窄为50米，飞流直下，骇浪翻滚，如千军万马奔腾怒吼，声传数十里外。其排山倒海的雄壮之势，素有“不观壶口大瀑布，难识黄河真面目”的盛誉。黄河巨流到壶口一带，两岸苍山挟持，约束在狭窄的石谷中，奔腾怒啸，山鸣谷应，滚滚浪涛跃入深潭，形若巨壶沸腾，故称“壶口瀑布”。

Hukou Waterfall is the world's largest yellow waterfall, located 45 kilometres west of Jixian County, Linfen. Here the Yellow River narrows from a width of 300 metres to just 50 metres, plunging down with waves raging like thousands of galloping horses, its roar heard for miles. Its overwhelming grandeur has earned the saying, "Without seeing Hukou Waterfall, you cannot know the true face of the Yellow River." As the great river reaches Hukou, flanked by green mountains on both banks, it is constricted into a narrow stone gorge, roaring and echoing, its rolling waves leaping into a deep pool, shaped like a giant teapot boiling—hence the name "Hukou" (Kettle Mouth) Waterfall.
