Shanxi New Year Custom: Dust Sweeping

年关将近，春节的脚步渐行渐近。从腊八过后，山西年的气氛便日渐浓厚，家家户户洒扫庭除，以窗明几净之姿，静候新春。

As the year draws to a close and the Spring Festival approaches, the custom of “dust sweeping” — a thorough year-end cleaning — takes center stage in Shanxi. From the Laba Festival onward, Shanxi’s festive atmosphere builds, and every family begins cleaning their homes inside and out, preparing a bright and tidy space to welcome the new spring.

山西民间有谚：“腊八祭灶，新年来到。”腊八一过，家家便着手扫尘。俗语亦云：“腊月二十四，掸尘扫房子”，实则扫尘之举，贯穿祭灶至岁末。人们清洗器具、拆洗被褥、洒扫庭院、疏浚沟渠，不放过任何角落。这一切，不只是为了整洁，更因“尘”与“陈”谐音——扫尘即“除陈布新”，寓意扫去旧岁晦气，迎来新年福气。

In Shanxi, there is a saying: “After Laba and the Kitchen God worship, the New Year arrives.” Once Laba passes, families start the dust-sweeping process. Another proverb states, “On the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month, sweep the dust and clean the house.” In practice, cleaning takes place from around the Kitchen God worship day until the end of the year. People wash utensils, take apart and clean bedding and curtains, sweep courtyards and pathways, wipe away dust and cobwebs, and clear out drains. This is not just about cleanliness—it carries a deeper meaning. In Chinese, “dust” (尘) sounds like “old” (陈), so sweeping dust symbolizes “removing the old to make way for the new.” It is believed to sweep away the misfortunes and worries of the past year, clearing out any lingering "bad luck" and inviting good fortune into the home.
